Description

Special edition developed in collaboration with The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Inspired by William Morris’s (British, 1834–1896) Violet and Columbine, a textile design registered in 1883, this table runner was developed through contemporary weaving techniques with a nod to traditional craftsmanship. Sketching and digital rendering in the Chilewich design studio helped translate the inspiration into a modern woven structure, bringing new functionality to its organic forms, rich colors, and complex pattern repeats.

  • Cleaning is easy. Simply wipe the mat with soap and water, and allow to air dry.
  • Mats with visible food residue can be sprayed with soapy water, scrubbed with a soft-bristle brush, or soaked in soapy water and then rinsed.
  • Do not clean with alcohol-based cleaning agents, as they can break down TerraStrand yarns over time.
  • Citrus-based cleaning agents are also not recommended, as they can cause discoloration.
  • Do not wash in dishwasher or washing machine. Do not iron or dry with heat. A high-temperature sanitizer may be used up to once per week.

Storage

  • Store Chilewich placemats flat.
  • Table runners may be rolled.
  • Do not store wet or allow mats to fold or crease.

A beautiful addition to any table

"The special Chilewich designs are so beautiful. I'd purchased the "roses" one for the summer, but this one feels right for fall and winter. And the colors and design also bring in the feeling of nature. In the photo I placed a light pink ceramic bowl by a local ceramic artist."

Q&A

FAQs

What is a Chilewich placemat made out of?

Chilewich woven placemats and table runners are made with TerraStrand, our phthalate-free vinyl yarn. Materials vary by style; check the product details for the specific materials.

How do I clean a placemat or runner?

Wipe it with soap and water using a soft sponge or cloth, then air-dry. For dried-on food, spray with soapy water and use a soft-bristle brush, or soak it briefly and rinse. For printed and pressed styles, use a soft sponge or cloth only. Avoid rough sponges and brushes on molded styles like Dahlia, as they can remove the metallic top layer. To sanitize pressed styles, use hydrogen peroxide rather than bleach.

Can I put placemats or runners in the dishwasher or washing machine?

No. Do not machine-wash or put them in the dishwasher. Do not iron or dry them with heat.

How do I remove a stubborn stain from a woven placemat?

Clean spills promptly, especially tea, coffee, tomato or chili sauce, turmeric, and saffron. Our care guide allows diluted bleach for stains on woven mats: 1 part bleach to 10 parts water for new or light stains, or 1:1 for set-in stains. Apply to the affected area, let it dry overnight, then rinse and scrub.

Can I use a placemat or runner outdoors?

Yes. Chilewich placemats and runners are suitable for outdoor use. As with any textile, prolonged direct sunlight can fade color over time.

Are Chilewich placemats and table runners good for hosting and holiday entertaining?

Yes. Chilewich placemats and table runners work for everyday dining, hosting, and holiday meals. Explore our curated sets to find complementary pieces for your home. Follow the care instructions for each style to keep them looking their best.

Can I set a hot pan or serving dish on a placemat?

We advise protecting placemats and runners from excessive heat at 200°F and above. Use a trivet for hot cookware and serving pieces.

How should I store a placemat or runner?

Store placemats flat and runners rolled. Do not store them wet or folded. If a mat creases, use a handheld garment steamer on its lowest setting.. Do not store them wet or folded. If a mat creases, use a handheld garment steamer on its lowest setting.
