Ernestine Zaumseil Placemat
Special edition developed in collaboration with The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Inspired by Ernestine Eberhardt Zaumseil’s (American, 1828–1904) Branches and Vines Quilt (ca. 1875), this placemat combines rhythmic, organic movement with nature-inspired forms in an homage to traditional American quiltmaking. Layers of hand-appliquéd texture are reimagined for modern life through precise printing on a durable woven textile that wipes clean.

About the original, in the Met's permanent collection: Working in the later years of the 19th century, Zaumseil created her extraordinary Branches and Vines Quilt employing the Tree of Life pattern, a design that has been popular for use on bedcovers since the 17th century. The first Tree of Life bedcovers, called palampores, were of Indian origin and featured a stylized tree bearing fantastical fruits and flowers. In Zaumseil’s quilt, the trees and branches are especially realistic, in part because she seems to have traced leaves from actual trees and vines to serve as patterns for her appliquéd designs.
TO CLEAN: Simply wipe with soap, water and a soft sponge or cloth. Scrub stubborn stains with a soft bristle-brush and a bleach-based cleanser.
