Product Maintenance

During this time of heightened health and safety precautions, we're receiving a high volume of inquiries about optimal cleaning methods.⁣⁣ Chilewich products have always been distinguished by their easy maintenance, but did you know they're also bleach-cleanable and antimicrobial? Here are key questions and answers:

Can I sanitize/disinfect my Chilewich products?⁣⁣
Yes. For all woven products (except printed designs) and all tufted (Shag) mats: A 50:1 water/bleach solution left on the surface for at least one minute will thoroughly clean and disinfect the material. A stronger solution can be used if desired. ⁣For all printed, metallic, and pressed table mats (including Glow, Lace, and John Derian + Chilewich): Use hydrogen peroxide. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Is there a bleach-free way to sanitize/disinfect my Chilewich woven or tufted (Shag) products?⁣⁣
Yes. Hydrogen peroxide may be used in place of bleach.⁣⁣

Are Chilewich products antimicrobial?⁣⁣
Yes. Antimicrobial protection (Microban) is built into all of our yarns at the polymer level. ⁣⁣Microban technology gives Chilewich products an added level of protection against stain- and odor-causing bacteria, mold and mildew. Antimicrobial protection not only reduces the risk of premature product degradation but also makes our products easier to clean and keeps them cleaner and fresher between cleanings.

I have had my Chilewich product for 10+ years. Is it still antimicrobial?⁣⁣
Yes. Because it is integrated into the yarns and not applied as a surface finish, the antimicrobial protection works continuously for the lifetime of the product.⁣⁣

PLACEMENT

  • Your rug is best suited to dry surfaces. It may be used on floors with radiant heating, provided that the floor temperature
does not exceed 85°F/30°C. It is woven with fade-resistant TerraStrand yarns, but, like all textiles, it may fade when
placed in direct sunlight for extended periods.
  • Do not place objects made of rubber (including rubber castors) on your rug, as they can cause discoloration. When placed upon a textured surface, the latex backing may become abraded. This will not affect the woven face of the textile or its performance. To prevent abrasion of the backing, a rug pad may be used.

CARE

  • Occasionally lift and air out your rug, which allows it—and the surface on which it sits—to ventilate and stay dry.
  • When moving or storing, roll up your rug with the woven surface facing outwards and tie loosely. In case of creasing,
steam using a handheld garment steamer on the lowest heat setting.

CLEANING

  • Cleaning is easy. To remove loose dirt and debris, sweep, vacuum, or shake out.
  • In case of spills, blot quickly with a damp, lint-free cloth. Persistent stains may be treated with spot cleaner and wiped with a cloth. If needed, follow with a residential carpet cleaner or mop the surface.
  • After cleaning, lift your rug and clean the floor. Allow both the rug and floor to dry completely before replacing.
  • For deep cleaning, we recommend hot water extraction with mechanical brushing using equipment such as the Rug Doctor Deep Carpet Cleaner, Rug Doctor Mighty Pro X3, or Bissell Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine.
  • Do not clean with acetone, Pine-Sol, or citrus-based cleaning agents, as they can cause degradation and/or discoloration.
  • Do not machine wash or iron.

  • Do not place your Shag mat on top of rubber or artificial decking material, and do not place objects made of rubber on your mat, as discoloration may occur.

Designed and made in the USA, your new table mat is extremely durable and features integrated protection against mold and mildew that lasts for the lifetime of the product. The guidance below will help to keep it in peak condition for many years to come.

CLEANING

  • Cleaning is easy. Simply wipe the mat with soap and water, and allow to air dry.
  • Mats with visible food residue can be sprayed with soapy water, scrubbed with a soft-bristle brush, or soaked in soapy water and then rinsed.
  • Do not clean with alcohol-based cleaning agents, as they can break down TerraStrand yarns over time.
  • Citrus-based cleaning agents are also not recommended, as they can cause discoloration.
  • Do not wash in dishwasher or washing machine. Do not iron or dry with heat. A high-temperature sanitizer may be used
    up to once per week.

STAIN REMOVAL

  • In case of spills, especially those of tea, coffee, tomato or chili-based sauces, turmeric, or saffron, promptly wipe and scrub mat to avoid staining.
  • To remove stains, diluted bleach may be used. For new or lighter stains, use a 1:10 bleach solution. For set-in stains, use a 1:1 bleach solution. Spray the affected area and let dry overnight before rinsing and scrubbing the mat.
  • Alternatively, dish detergent solution, hydrogen peroxide, carpet stain remover, or oven cleaner may be used to remove stains.
  • To remove oil residue, a degreaser may be used. Apply directly to the affected area, allow cleaner to soften the residue, and then brush and blot the area to remove both the cleaner and the dissolved stain. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry.
  • If spot cleaning with a hard water cleaner or a remover of calcium, lime, and rust, do not apply directly to the affected area. Instead, apply cleaner to a cloth without saturating it and then rub into the affected area. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry.

STORAGE

  • Store Chilewich placemats flat.
  • Table runners may be rolled.
  • Do not store wet or allow mats to fold or crease.
  • In case of creasing, steam using a handheld garment steamer on the lowest heat setting.

Petal Coasters and Bloom Coasters in color Brass, Gold, Gunmetal, Silver, and Pink Champagne:

  • Top layer metallic foil may be damaged if treated with rough sponges/brushes, harsh soaps or chemicals. Clean using warm water, mild soap and a clean soft sponge. Rinse well and air dry.
  • Avoid cleaning agents that contain bleach, ammonia, household alcohol or other harsh ingredients.
  • To sanitize, wipe with white vinegar and a clean non-abrasive sponge or lint-free cloth. Rinse well and air dry.
  • Machine washing or dishwasher use is not recommended.

FELT-BACKED COASTERS AND NAPKIN RINGS

  • To clean, simply wipe with soap, water, and a soft sponge/cloth.
  • Standard antibacterial cleanser can also be used. Wipe stainless steel with dry cloth and allow textile insert to air dry.
  • Machine washing or dishwasher use is not recommended.
  • Permanent stains may result when certain food or liquids are left on the textile of stainless steel napkin rings for long periods before cleaning. This is more likely to occur with lighter-colored textiles.
  • DO NOT SOAK FOR PROLONGED PERIODS IN HOT WATER (not more than 160°F/70°C) OR USE HARSH CHEMICALS.
  • DO NOT RUN THROUGH THE DISHWASHER.
